A brief history of Madrid
Originally known as Swede Point

and first settled in 1846. The oldest continously inhabited Swedish settlement west of the Mississippi. It was re-named Madrid in 1882; officially incorporated in 1883. A major portion of Madrid's heritage grows out of the coal mining era of 1910-1945.
The population is 2,543 (2010 census).
