A brief history of Madrid
Originally known as Swede Point

and first settled in 1846. The oldest continously inhabited Swedish settlement west of the Mississippi.  It was re-named Madrid in 1882; officially incorporated in 1883.  A major portion of Madrid's heritage grows out of the coal mining era of 1910-1945.


The population is 2,543 (2010 census).                                


Madrid is located in central Iowa approximately 25 miles northwest of Des Moines; 20 miles southwest of Ames, and 17 miles southeast of the county seat of Boone.  Go to  mapquest and type in the zip code of 50156 to see a map of Madrid.
